Is dental covered under pet insurance?
Many pet insurers don't offer dental. Even pet insurance with dental cover may only protect your pet’s teeth in cases of accidents, not illness. That means any preventative or elective treatments your pet needs might not be included within your policy.
At Napo, we think comprehensive cover should be
truly
comprehensive. That means including dental treatments. Our pet insurance includes dental as standard.
As long as your pet has had a dental check up in the last 12 months, we’ll cover any treatment recommended by a vet, as long as veterinary treatment is given within 3 months.
We also think prevention is better than cure. That's why our pet dental insurance can include procedures like a veterinary scale and polish, which most insurers may not pay for.
So whether you’re looking for dog insurance with dental, or cat insurance with dental, we’ve got you covered.

FAQs about pet insurance dental coverage
Why is dental care important for pets?
Our pets use their mouths like we use our hands. They’ll lick, chew, or nibble their way through the world. Not only that, but strong and healthy teeth are vital for your pet to be able to eat!
We all know how rotten life is with toothache. And no dog or cat will want to eat or play a lot with a sore mouth.
But our furry friends can’t tell us when they’re in pain, and have to eat to survive, so they will try to keep eating even if their teeth or mouth hurts. That’s why it’s important to have your pet’s dental heath checked regularly.
Not only that, but severe dental disease can lead to
other illnesses. Which makes looking after your pet’s teeth and gums essential to protect their overall health and wellbeing.
Because we know dental health is vital for your pet’s overall health, we think it’s important to cover it. That’s why all our pet insurance policies include dental cover.

Why doesn't pet insurance cover dental?
Some pet insurers won’t cover dental work, and often don’t explain why. Usually, it’s because dental treatments like teeth cleaning are seen as routine or preventative, which insurance typically won't cover.
Regardless of why other insurers won’t cover dental care, Napo is different. Our pet insurance includes dental cover, as standard. So no matter what policy you buy, you’ll be able to protect your pet’s teeth against accidents and illness.
Which pet insurance includes dental?
Napo pet insurance includes dental cover as standard. Depending on the policy you have, you will get
£1000
or
£2000
per policy year towards dental cover.
All Napo pet insurance covers dental treatment, as long as your pet has had a dental check in the last year, and any treatment is given within 3 months of your vet’s recommendation.
Your pet’s annual dental check doesn’t need to be a specific check-up. Just ask your vet to check your dog or cat’s teeth as part of their annual health check. (Or whenever you’re next at the vets.) Just like a human check-up, this helps to spot problems early.
Does pet insurance cover dental extractions?
Whether or not your insurance includes extractions will depend on your provider and the policy you buy. However if you’re with Napo, your pet insurance covers dental extractions as standard.
Does pet insurance include dental cleaning?
Many insurers won’t cover professional teeth cleaning, or a scale and polish, because they see this as a routine or preventative treatment.
But here at Napo, we think prevention is better than the cure. That’s why our pet insurance includes dental cleaning, as long as it is recommended and performed by a vet to treat an illness.
A veterinary scale and polish must be performed under anaesthetic. Because of this,
it can cost anywhere between
£250 to £450
. Having pet insurance that includes dental cleaning can save you money and save your pet from toothache.
Will pet insurance cover dental surgery?
We can’t speak for all pet insurance, because we know every provider is different, and the policies they offer vary. But here at Napo, we do offer pet insurance that covers dental surgery.
To be more specific, we will cover any dental treatment that’s due to an accident or illness as long as it is recommended and performed by a vet. That includes veterinary teeth cleaning, root canals, and extractions.
We just ask that your pet has had a dental check in the last 12 months. And that when a vet prescribes a treatment, it’s given within 3 months of that recommendation. (You’d not want to be left with a toothache for longer!)
Is dog dental insurance worth it?
We think it’s always worth protecting your pet’s teeth. Dental disease, like any painful condition, can impact your pooch’s quality of life. Plus, teeth don’t heal themselves if they’re damaged. That’s why we think it’s essential all our policies include dental cover for dogs (and cats!)
If you own a dog, you’ll know better than anyone that a dog uses their mouth for everything, not just eating. But
87% of dogs are affected by periodontal disease
(dental disease) by age 3.
Dental disease can lead to inflammation, sore mouths, severe toothache, tooth loss, and even “osteomyelitis” which is damage or infection to the jaw bone.
We know having dog dental cover is worth it because good dental health will help to keep your pup happy and healthy in general. It also means sore teeth and gums won’t get in the way of how your puppy feels, eats, or plays.
Plus, dental treatments can be costly, (like any vet bills.) For example, removing one of your dog’s teeth can cost
between £300 and £1000 in vet fees. Having dog insurance that covers dental will mean you can save your pet from toothache, without breaking the bank.
Is cat dental insurance worth it?
Cats use their mouths all the time to eat, play, and groom themselves. It’s worth protecting their teeth and oral health with cat insurance with dental cover, so they’re never left with toothache.
85% of cats
over 3 years old suffer from dental problems.
But
treatment can be expensive, such as
£300
for a cat’s scale and polish, or up to to
£800
for an extraction. Ouch!
But, Napo’s got your back, and our policies all provide cat dental insurance so you can keep your cat’s teeth clean and healthy.
