Step 1: Get on the scent
· Hide the scent bag behind your back.
· Hold treats in your other hand Present the bag to your pooch
· When they sniff, say ‘good!’ and reward from your treat hand
· Repeat x3 then swap hands
Step 2: Create the cue
· Pick a cue for sniffing out the scent. (Try 'find it!' or 'tennis')
· Use your cue and bring the bag out to sniff. When they do, reward as before
· Repeat til they're ready to level up
Step 3: Certified sniffer dog!
· With your dog outside the room, put the scent bag on the floor (not hidden!)
· Open the door and say the cue
· When your dog goes to the bag, reward and repeat!
· For further challenges, hide the scent in several places at once, or hide the scent in containers for an extra tricky challenge. You can even set up multiple scents with individual cues. The variations on scentwork are pretty much endless!
