Multi-pet insurance: is it cheaper to insure multiple pets?

The short answer

Multi-pet insurance can be a cheaper way to cover multiple pets, but it depends on each pet’s needs, your policy, and any discounts applied. Each pet is still assessed and priced based on their individual details (e.g. breed, age, gender).

What is multi-pet insurance?

Multi-pet insurance is a way to insure more than one pet with the same provider. That means instead of juggling separate policies, logins and admin, you can manage things all in one place.

This can be handy if your household has a growing crew of furry family members - especially if you’ve already insured one pet and are thinking of adding another.

The key thing to know is “multi-pet” doesn’t guarantee one single price for all your family pets bundled together. Your Labrador and your Tabby are not treated as one shared risk, because each pet has their own details, health history, and policy needs.

Is multi-pet insurance actually cheaper?

It can be, but it depends on a few factors. If a multi-pet discount applies, insuring more than one pet with the same provider may cost less than without that discount. That’s the straightforward bit.

However, as each pet is still priced individually, your premium can vary depending on things like your pet’s species, breed, age, and the cover options you choose. For instance, a young indoor cat and an older dog are unlikely to cost the same amount to insure, even if they live in the same home and are covered by the same insurance provider. It’s the same story even if you wanted to insure two dogs.

Among other reasons why your premiums might rise, the future risk of insuring your pet increases as they get older, just like us. Some providers and comparison websites offer discounts for new customers, which can often be more significant than a multi-pet discount.

But for practical pet owners, it’s worth comparing the actual quote you get, not just jumping at the first discount you see. Check what’s covered, what the excess is, whether any co-pay applies, and how the price changes when you add another pet.

A multi-pet insurance discount can be helpful, but it’s only one part of the picture. Good value is about the overall cover, claims support, policy terms, and whether the setup works for your household.

How is each pet priced?

This is where many people get caught out. Adding a second pet doesn’t mean the second pet simply ‘shares’ the first pet’s price.

Insurers look at the details for each pet separately because each pet has their own level of risk. Factors they’re likely to consider include:

  • their species

  • their breed

  • their age

  • where you live

  • the cover level you choose

  • any relevant health information

  • excess, co-pay or other options applied to your current policy

Think of it like adding another mobile phone to a family plan. The second phone still has a cost, but there may be a saving for keeping things together. One account can be neater and a multi-pet insurance discount can help, but each pet still has their own price.

Is multi-pet insurance easier to manage?

Price matters, but it’s not the only reason people look at multi-pet insurance. The admin side can be a big win too.

If you have more than one pet, you’re already juggling household logistics. Food, vet appointments, toys, and beds that they never sleep in mean it all adds up. Insurance is one more thing you need to keep on top of, so having multiple pets with the same provider could make life a little simpler.

Depending on how the provider sets things up, multi-pet cover may help you manage quotes or policies in one place more easily, with just one support team to deal with when you need help. It can also be convenient if you’re an existing customer - rather than shopping around from zero, you may be able to log in, add another pet, and see what your updated quote looks like in minutes.

Of course, convenience should still come with a proper look at the details. Check the cover limits, exclusions, excess and total cost before you decide.

Does Napo pet insurance offer multi-pet cover?

Yes! Napo pet insurance provides lifetime cover for dogs and cats, with a 5% multi-pet discount for insuring more than one pet.

Please note: if you already have a pet insured with us and you're adding another pet later on, the 5% multi-pet discount is only applied on the new policy. That means the first pet insured with us won’t benefit from the discount until their renewal.

For new customers, you can add another pet during the quote journey. Once you’ve filled out the details for your first pet, simply add another pet’s details and we’ll give you a quote to insure both. Your multi-pet discount is applied to the quote automatically, so you don’t need to calculate it yourself.

If you’re an existing Napo customer, you can go to your Napo dashboard and get a quote for another pet directly. Your quote options will show different cover levels with the discount already applied.

Never forget that even with a multi-pet discount, each pet is assessed and priced individually. So your final price will depend on the pet details you enter and the cover you choose. The discount may reduce the premium, but it doesn’t mean multi-pet cover will always be the cheapest option available.

Frequently asked questions

Is multi-pet insurance always cheaper?

No, you should never assume multi-pet insurance is always the cheapest option for insuring multiple pets. It can work out cheaper if a multi-pet discount applies, but each pet is still priced individually. Your total cost depends on the pets you’re insuring, their details, and the cover you choose.

Can I insure dogs and cats together?

Typically yes, but it depends on your insurer. While Napo pet insurance lets you insure cats and dogs together, other insurers may differ. It’s worth asking your preferred insurer’s customer support team before taking out a multi-pet policy.

Is there a limit on the number of pets you can insure?

Again, it depends on the insurer. Check your quote carefully or speak to your insurer if you’re adding several pets - they’ll be able to confirm any limits,  discounts applied, and how the policy setup will work for your household.

At Napo pet insurance, you can insure as many pets as you like!

Do I get one renewal date?

Renewal dates depend on how and when policies are taken out. If you buy a policy insuring multiple pets together at the same time, your admin may be simpler than if you were to insure pets at different points. If having one straightforward renewal date matters to you, check this before buying a multi-pet policy or adding another pet to your current policy.

Can I add another pet to my policy later?

Yes. It depends on your insurer, but most will welcome the addition of more four-legged friends.

If you’re a Napo customer, you can add another pet through your Napo dashboard by heading to ‘Your policies’ and selecting ‘Cover another pet’. Your multi-pet discount is applied automatically to the new quote, with your new pet still assessed and priced using their own individual details.
